Providing parents with tips on how to support healthy decision-making among teens

One of the Prevention WINS coalition's strategies to prevent youth substance abuse in NE Seattle is outreach and education among parents.  The coalition's campaign to help parents support healthy decision-making among their children includes postcards containing parenting tips.  These tips echo what parents learn through tested and effective prevention programs like Guiding Good Choices and Strengthening Families, which is offered to Eckstein Middle School families twice a year.

The first round of postcards are in the mail and will go to all families of students attending Eckstein Middle School, Nathan Hale High School and Roosevelt High School.

The coalition's Social Marketing Workgroup, which is developing the campaign, will meet again on Tuesday, December 6 at 6:30 p.m.  Contact the Prevention WINS coordinator for more information.

Drug-Free Homes Parent Pledge

Within the next week, the 2009-10 Drug-Free Homes Parent Pledge will be mailed to all Eckstein Middle School parents and guardians. When parents/guardians sign the pledge they agree not to allow underage drinking in their homes and agree to monitor their teenagers to the best of their ability.

The pledge is part of a community-wide campaign to prevent underage drinking. It is one tool the coalition offers parents/guardians. Guiding Good Choices parenting workshops and a Student Assistance Counselor are also available to help adults prevent underage drinking and substance abuse.

Eckstein Middle School
3003 NE 75th Street in Seattle

Speakers:

-- J. David Hawkins, PhD, from the University of Washington's Social Development Research Group and developer of Guiding Good Choices

-- Ruth Herold, Executive Director of Changes Parent Support Network

The speakers will be followed by small group discussions, enabling parents/guardians to share tips and experiences about monitoring their children.

Monitoring teenagers

One way for parents to prevent alcohol and drug use among their children is to know where they are and what they will be doing during unsupervised time. Research shows that teens with unsupervised time are three times more likely to use marijuana and other drugs. Unsupervised teens are also more likely to engage in risky behaviors such as underage drinking, sexual activity, and cigarette smoking than other teens.

SAVE THE DATE! Join parents in our community to learn more about monitoring skills . . .

Monday, March 23
7:00 - 8:30 p.m.

Eckstein Middle School

This free parenting forum will feature Dr. David Hawkins, developer of Guiding Good Choices, and time will be set aside for parents to discuss with other parents their concerns and solutions when it comes to monitoring teenage children.
